I've been absent for much longer than I ever anticipated, and for no good reason other than I felt like taking a break from blogging (still very much active on Instagram where I manage FIVE different accounts!). To be honest, my last sponsored post did not go at all how I planned and prompted the decision that I would likely not do any more sponsored work on this blog, or at least not without very careful consideration. I can't say if I'm back on any regular basis right now, but I do miss my blogging community and I'm certainly not without stuff to share with you!

Boca's results with the other DNA test prompted me to get both girls tested through Embark (and let me just state right up front that I paid for these tests out of pocket and was in no way compensated or even contacted by Embark.) I have to say that I was really impressed with the whole process, and pretty excited about the results.

All this time I've been calling Ruby a Border Jack, when she appears to have more Rat Terrier than anything else. Still a bit of Jack, but that 15.8% pug was the biggest surprise of all! (Her Wisdom Panel results also showed the possibility of some pug). Now I guess I can say she's a Border-Rat, or 'Brat' for short! I have no doubt whatsoever that she is, in some configuration, a herding terrier.

Boca's results were the most important, because of her previous test identifying her as high-percentage American Staffordshire Terrier, when we live in one of the worst BSL cities in the country. I was truthfully really scared that publishing those results would expose us to trouble, which is why my "Guess the Breed" series had an unsatisfying conclusion. While Embark shows her as 21.6% AmStaff, the majority is American Village Dog - or Potcake - as you might expect with a dog that was rescued from The Bahamas! Embark is the only DNA test that includes indigenous village dogs in its database, and it can pinpoint the region as well.

I won't get too far into breed-specific legislation here, but suffice to say it is stupid. My city's is completely subjective, too, as the dog only has to look 50% like any of the banned breeds. How do you even quantify this? A neighboring city accepts DNA tests showing they are less than 50% banned breeds. Although we are considered a dog-friendly city, this won't ever be true until BSL is eliminated.

In addition to the breed information, Embark provides some fascinating genetic trait details for things such as size, coat length and coat color. I'll admit that some of it goes over my head. Most valuable of all, they test for a wide range of genetic conditions and are able to alert you to potential health problems. Boca got the all-clear for every condition they test for, but Ruby is at risk for lens luxation, which is a great thing to know should she ever have any eye issues. (Please, no more eye issues...)

All in all, having used various brands of DNA tests over the years, Embark is by the far the one I most trust. They are constantly updating their database - including sending surveys out collect more information about dogs they've tested - and they are partnered with Cornell University. There is also a very active Facebook group for guesses, reveals and discussions. It is more expensive than the others but you get so much more useful information. If you'd like to see the full profiles for both girls, I've linked them below:

Ruby

DNA testing has its fans and its critics, but it's probably a tool I'll always use for rescued dogs. It helps piece together the unknowns and gives you a reply to "OMG, so cute, what breed are they?" Embark even links you to potential relatives, and I'm still hoping that a Potcake related to Boca will show up.

Have you had your dog(s) DNA tested? What did you think of the results?
As predicted, Boca's Royal Canin Genetic Health Analysis results came back as largely mixed. Potcakes are indigenous to the islands of the Caribbean and may be generation upon generation of various mixed breeds along with the introduction of DNA from purebred pet animals that are allowed to roam. According to the provided test results, Boca has representation from the Herding, Sporting and Terrier groups. I submit that Boca is a Certified Couch Potato!

After receiving our results I had a wonderful conversation with a veterinarian from Royal Canin, who just happened to have the greatest name. Dr. Sprinkle provided us with some targeted nutritional recommendations based on Boca's Genetic Health Analysis, in order to optimize her diet for needs specific to her size and breed groups.

The predicted weight from Boca's results is right on the money - she between 33 and 34 pounds (although at our wellness check last week our vet suggested that Boca go on a little diet). Dr. Sprinkle recommended the Medium Adult food from the Royal Canin line, and Boca was more than happy to pose with a bag! This food contains antioxidants, prebiotics, and Omega-3s which support healthy skin, coat and joints.

Dr. Sprinkle said this would be a good, well-rounded diet for Boca since her hardy mix of breeds was not particularly prone to genetic issues. This medium-sized kibble would meet Boca's energy needs and promote overall general well-being. As Boca gets older she did suggest we pay attention to kidney and dental health, as Royal Canin offers a prescription dental diet that helps to reduce tartar. My little kitty was on the Royal Canin prescription renal diet for several years and it definitely kept her healthy through her late teens.

It was interesting to see that Boca's ancestry was as mixed as you'd expect for a mutt from the streets of The Bahamas, and to learn about the ways her diet could be adjusted to suit the nutritional needs of my sport-herding-island-terrier! Stay tuned for more DNA fun as I re-test both Ginger Sisters to compare results!
This blog began with the challenges of a reactive dog. Some day I'll tell you the story of when Ruby's reactivity first appeared and how I spent a lot of time blaming myself and the choices I made for it.

Today I'm here to tell you that Ruby is still - will always be - a reactive dog, but how mostly it isn't an issue anymore. It isn't an issue not because I am not constantly managing it and making decisions around Ruby's reactivity, but because it doesn't define us, and because if there is one thing you can count on, it's change. Ruby has softened and sweetened before my very eyes, daring me to be less afraid and to trust her with things that were previously out of our comfort zone.

Let me be clear: Ruby is still a maniac on the leash when she sees other dogs or bicycles, but if I time it right, I can significantly reduce the severity of her reaction by simply picking her up. Since I wrote this post, Ruby now looks to me whenever she is uncomfortable or in need of some reassurance to scoop her into my arms. I'm lucky she's small enough to do so, and I don't think it's a cheat or a sign that she's spoiled - it's simply what works for us.

Recently I took Ruby and Boca to visit our dear friend at her farm on the prairie, complete with three dogs, three cats, a herd of horses, donkeys, goats and llamas and a flock of ducks - a veritable menagerie of triggers, right? Not to mention that first we had to get there, in the car. I solved Ruby's car-barking by getting her a crate for road trips, but the unfortunate trade-off is that riding in the crate exacerbates her car sickness. I decided to compromise by leaving the mesh door unzipped so that she could come out of the crate on her own once we set off.

Ruby exited her crate by the time we reached the freeway, and soon there was a motorcycle in front of us - one of her triggers. I glanced back to confirm that yes, Ruby definitely saw the motorcycle. And didn't bark. We saw two more on our round trip - still no barking. Best of all - no puking! Boca was not thrilled to give up part of the seat and eventually curled up in the snug travel crate - an amusing sight. Four ginger dogs and one black dog romped around my friend's yard for hours and tried their luck with several disciplinarian cats. Ruby got her fill of barking at real-life horses and made a new terrier friend (a fellow Jack Russell mix with whom she exchanged hilariously spastic play-bows) all without incident. It was a glorious day for everyone.

Another small win this month was that I was able to comb out the mats in Ruby's increasingly long Border Collie-esque pantaloon feathers (technical term). She used to be afraid of the comb, and suspicious of most grooming activities. Now she accepts nail clipping, paw massages and feather-untangling. She wags her pretty paintbrush tail more, in wide sideways sweeps. She lays upside down and makes adorable blissful grunts and implores me to scratch her armpits. These changes are evidence of the growing security she feels, and it makes my heart soar to see her breathe a little deeper, settling into her own skin and the life and routines she can feel safe within.

One of my goals for Ruby and I this summer is to take her on a solo backpacking trip. This will come with its own challenges - like swiftly scooping her up if I need to with a 30 pound pack on my back- but I believe the memories and experience it will entail outweigh the hurdles. Last night my boyfriend and I did a test-pitch of my new tent - a bright yellow, crinkly, novel object - and much to my delight and surprise, as soon as the door was unzipped, my (not so) timid little red-and-white dog climbed right in! Ruby is ready for new adventures, and a constant reminder that we are always evolving, that curiosity can overcome fear, and that who we are is never limited by who we were. Boca is, officially, a Royal Bahamian Potcake - a mixed-breed dog native
to the islands of the Caribbean - but what breed mixture actually makes
up a Potcake is anyone's guess. Potcakes can vary widely in appearance,
from longer-haired shepherd-types to short-haired, houndish dogs. One
fascinating aspect of street dogs is that certain characteristics are
apparent all over the world. Boca looks very much like some pictures of
street dogs in India that I've seen, and she is smaller than the
typical Bahamian Potcake. A recent study attempted to make sense of the Potcake puzzle, and determined that the gene pool of island dogs included a multitude of breeds both ancient and modern. (Some of the dogs used in this study came from the same shelter as Boca!)
When we were approached by Royal Canin
to see if we wanted to review their new Genetic Health Analysis DNA
testing kit, we excitedly seized the opportunity. The GHA testing kit
provides breed results from 250 possible breeds as well as a detailed health snapshot which identifies over 130 genetic mutations.
I have used DNA tests in the past for Ruby and a previous dog, Lasya,
and find them to be not only fun, but advantageous in understanding
behavior, energy and management needs.
I'm usually fairly adept at correctly guessing the components of mixed breed dogs and love to play along any time I see a "Guess the Breed" game, but Boca has always had me stumped. She looks like...an adorable medium-sized dog! We've been asked by multiple people if she is a Basenji, and based on size, coloration, and the wrinkles she sometimes has on her forehead, as well as the graceful arch of her neck, if I had to pick one breed she most resembles, it would have to be a Basenji.
Boca came to Colorado as a 4-5 year old dog who had lived in a shelter in The Bahamas for approximately one year. I therefore have very limited information about her previous health history. Longtime readers may recall Boca's 'Ocular Ordeal,' which perplexed several top specialists in our area, so any insight into other potential risks that we can manage ahead of time will be incredibly valuable, not to mention the fun of learning Boca's breed make-up!
The process of having Boca tested was very easy - especially since she seems to enjoy trips to the vet! We had a pleasant drive to the our awesome vet's office, she waited patiently for her appointment, happily posed with our fabulous vet tech Heather, placed herself on the scale to be weighed (exactly 33 pounds if anyone is asking), and willingly followed the staff to an exam room where they swiftly drew a blood sample. This blood sample was packaged and shipped to the Royal Canin lab, and soon after we were notified that it is being processed!
I can hardly stand the suspense and bet there will be some surprises in Boca's unique island ancestry. We'd love to invite our readers to play along - what breeds do you think Boca could be comprised of? Comment with your guesses and we will be back to share the results in a few weeks!
Boca sometimes likes to sleep in the dog bed in the bedroom, particularly during the summer when it's too warm for dog pile cuddling. Both dogs use the bedroom dog bed as a launch pad onto the big bed since I have slippery laminate floors. I think it's important for our pets to have a variety of places to feel safe and comfortable in our homes, which is why I was delighted to partner with Brentwood Home for a pet bed giveaway!
Brentwood Home knows what they are doing when it comes to luxurious rest...they have been handcrafting mattresses for people and producing them in their California factory for many years. Their pet beds are made from those same non-toxic, high quality materials and stylishly designed to fit in with almost any decor.

I chose the Runyon Bed in Mocha for the Ginger Sisters, since they like the bolster-style beds with a place to rest their heads. The washable cover is sturdy but soft, and the orthopedic foam offers a supportive, cushiony place to curl up. Boca barely waited until the bed was unboxed to try it out, and she opted to sleep in the new bed several nights in a row once it was in the bedroom.
I'm not the best at taking my vitamins, but I seem to do better with giving supplements to The Ginger Sisters. We've tried fish oil, coconut oil, and several different calming supplements. The research seems like it is always changing, but the benefits of omega fatty acids for both pets and humans are consistently backed by science. That's why I was excited to partner with OmegaBrite and incorporate their Omega-3 supplement that Ruby, Boca and I could all take together!

After obtaining proper dosage instructions for Boca's 32 pounds and Ruby's 18 pounds, I started giving the girls two capusles and one capsule, respectively, with their evening meal. This was an easy reminder for me to also take my two capsules each night! I've since discovered that Boca will happily eat her capsules plain and whole.
Here are some of the benefits for dogs:

EPA, one of the two omega-3 fatty acids in OmegaBrite, acts as an anti-inflammatory. This will help with any condition that causes inflammation of the heart, kidneys, skin, and joints—such as arthritis etc

OmegaBrite will ease inflammation due to allergies, and reduce itchy skin and dandruff. This can also be an effective way to potentially decrease the incidence of hot spots on your pet.

OmegaBrite promotes a shiny, healthy coat, and reduces shedding. (For cats, this may also mean fewer hairballs, since your cat won't pick up as many loose hairs while grooming.)

DHA, the other omega-3 fatty acid in OmegaBrite, is important in brain and eye development in puppies and kittens. Giving OmegaBrite to pregnant or nursing pets can benefit the babies once they're born.

In some studies, fish oil has slowed the growth of cancer. Though more studies are needed to reach conclusive results, some veterinarians recommend it for any pets with cancer.

Our 14-day trial has so far yielded some noticeable results. The most dramatic are the changes in Ruby's coat. Both girls have very smooth, short hair, but as Ruby gets older I think more of her Border Collie genes are coming out, and her undercarriage, bloomers and tail get longer and fluffier by the year! The difference in her coat is the most noticeable, with dark red tones coming out and softer and shinier than I've ever seen.

Both Ruby and Boca are in excellent healthy; however, we had a big scare with Boca's eye a few years ago, and the exact cause was never determined. Our ophthalmologist suggested that Boca could have had a run-in with a tick-borne disease and that her immune system could be compromised for life. The autoimmune benefits of omega fatty acids are something that is especially relevant for Boca.

This particular supplement was developed with a focus on brain health. Ruby could probably do calculus already, but for myself I have noticed a little more mental energy lately. My mood has definitely improved over the last two weeks; however, I've also gone on two weekend trips to the Colorado mountains as the aspen leaves are in full autumnal glory, so I can't give OmegaBrite all the credit. One of my favorite things about OmegaBrite, having taken fish oil supplements in the past, is that there is no fishy aftertaste. If you hate swallowing pills like I do, there is even a kids' version!

I really like that OmegaBrite is formulated from small cold water fish from coastal South America. Salmon oil, while popular, holds the risk of containing higher levels of mercury. The smaller fish like sardines and anchovies have less risk of these higher levels. I feel great about giving my girls a human-grade Omega 3 supplement with stringent testing policies, too!

Overall, I'm very happy with our experience and plan to continue taking OmegaBrite along with giving it to The Ginger Sisters. What about you - do you regularly give a fish oil or omega supplement to your pets or take one yourself?

The upside-down perspective of this picture is a perfect representation of how Ruby changed my world, and how our trust and relationship has grown over time. Recently we celebrated four years together, having adopted her in August of 2013. Just weeks prior, my previous dogs were still alive and adopting
another wasn't even a consideration, but I had decided that Ruby Pearl would be a perfect name for my next dog based on a book that I was reading that summer. Life can change in a heartbeat. When I lost both
14 year old dogs within ten days I thought I would wait a while before
looking again, but the house felt unbearably empty. I perused the
adoption personals. I saw that very first picture. Her name was Foxy Roxy and she
looked sharp as a tack - like she might know calculus - and skeptical,
like she was holding back the softest parts of herself. She looked like
she could be the best kind of trouble. She is everything I first saw and
so much more.

Losing
and finding are two sides of the same coin. I lost my two old dogs and found Ruby. I lost the dream of a dog I could take everywhere (until I adopted the Queen of Chill, Boca, also thanks to Ruby). Instead, I found a dog that inspired
compassion and creativity, patience and humility. Ruby gave me a deeper
understanding of dog behavior and training, and thereby a deeper
understanding of myself. Because of her, I started my blog, met
countless other dog people and made new lasting friendships, taught her
over thirty tricks, protested the sale of pet store puppies, and helped start a dog rescue. In the beginning, when Ruby's reactivity first began to surface, I was
disappointed that we wouldn't be going to dog-friendly patios and
participating in agility or flyball. I was frustrated that training
wasn't a fast or surefire cure. It isn't that I have given up on training, but
that I accept Ruby as she is and rely heavily on management. Once I did this, the frustration faded. Part of that initial
disappointment was not being able to share all of her wonderful
qualities, but Rubicon Days has allowed me to share her with
all of you. Thank you. I'm so grateful to know there are others who
stick with their challenging dogs, commit to their needs, forgive their
sensitivities and recognize their strengths.

Ruby will always be a
reactive dog, but over the years she has become softer, sweeter. She
wags her tail all the time: slow, sweeping conversational wags and blurry animated helicopter wags where a tug toy or ball is involved. She lets me hold her upside down for armpit scratches and paw massages. She
communicates with what I call her "chicken barks" in addition to a hilarious assortment of grunts and grumbles. She makes sure I get
out of the shower alive. She licks my face with an impressive fervor, all the more if I dare giggle.
She melts my heart with her pouty lip that is exactly the color of an earthworm. She astounds me with her intelligence. She reminds me how to play, complete with play-growls. She taught me how big love can be. I've known so many animals in my life
but Ruby burns the brightest, digging as only a terrier can dig,
straight to my heart. I call her Punkin' Pie (it has to be said and spelled that way). I nibble her ears and say "I'll eat you up, I love you so," from Where the Wild Things Are. I emblazoned her onto my arm for all time. I've spent these past four years trying to describe what she means to me and I still haven't quite managed but I expect I'll keep trying. I'm not the least bit embarrassed by any of it - it's who I am, because of her. More than anything, Ruby has taught me that when we feel safe and loved, we can relax, roll over, show our bellies. When we feel accepted, we can be our most beautiful selves.

Everyone who knows me knows that I'm obsessed with dogs - any and all dogs, to a point, but more specifically, my dogs. I could look at Ruby's adorable face all day, and since she's on my phone, computer, office bulletin board, and oh yeah, on my arm, I can and do! Boca's antics entertain me endlessly and I have no less than thirty photos of her in my favorite potcake posture, the street dog slouch. I jump at the chance to brag about Ruby's smarts and Boca's sweetness, and pity the unsuspecting person who innocently asks "what kind of dogs do you have?" since Boca's breed/rescue story alone is another tale in itself.

I still felt there was potential to level up my passion and Pop Your Pup was the key. I previously reviewed their customized t-shirts and when they approached me for another partnership I gladly agreed. They've changed their look and now offer even more options for proudly wearing the cutest dogs in the world (your own, of course) or turning them into home-gallery-ready works of art in the way of wrapped read canvases! I mean, how awesome are these? Just in case it wasn't clear, this post has been sponsored by Pop Your Pup.
Pop Your Pup's ordering process could not be easier, and it's tons of
fun as well. You select your product, upload your photo and choose from a variety of backgrounds - everything from tacos and ice cream
cones to vibrant solid colors. I loved the bright cheery colors of the floral background I
chose for Ruby's picture, and Boca obviously had to have the tropical
blooms as a nod to her Bahamian roots.

In just one business day after placing your order, the Pop Your Pup artist team will
send you proofs of your designs. If you're not happy for any reason,
they can make adjustments or you can start fresh. As you can see, I
ended up going with a different picture of Boca after seeing the proof.
The first photo is one of my favorites - she's grinning about that nice
cool hole she dug in my friend's backyard - but the angle ended up
looking funny on the shirt design.

I uploaded a different picture (taken by my photographer friend along with the picture I chose of Ruby) and within no time I had a
new proof to review. I finalized my order and anxiously awaited the
arrival of my new dog nerd swag. You can see that it's a perfect
likeness of Boca when she is in a (rare) serious mood. I love that I
have a skeptical side-eye potcake shirt to wear!

I am a giant dork when it comes to my dogs. I talk to them out loud on
walks without a care who hears, my Subaru's bumper is plastered with
rescue magnets and I paid extra for that 'Adopt a Shelter Pet' Colorado
license plate. My house is pretty much designed around the comfort and
well-being of my dogs. I'm thrilled to add this sweet Boca t-shirt and
Ruby canvas to my ridiculous repertoire of besottedness.

If our fashion choices are a way to express ourselves and our homes are a place to surround ourselves with what's most dear to us, then I think it's fair to say that Pop Your Pup has helped to show my true colors (ginger and white, paws down) and adorn my house with the larger-than-life inquisitive gaze of the dog love of my life. Since Ruby has barked at other canid artwork in the past, I wondered what her reaction to the canvas would be. She didn't bat a white eyelash at it - do you think she recognized herself?

As if it wasn't before, my dog obsession is undeniable now that I can wear my Boca shirt and admire my Ruby canvas while hanging out at home with the Ginger Sisters, or take the unapologetic show of devotion on the road. Since Ruby is permanently emblazoned on my shoulder, while wearing my Pop Your Pup Boca shirt I won't even have to take out my phone to show off pictures of my dogs! (You know I still will, though...I have hundreds)
If
you need to proclaim your love for your dog (or cat, or parrot) from
head to toe and on every (or at least one) wall of your house, check out
Pop Your Pup at their web page, Facebook and Instagram. I am already eyeing a pizza canvas for another picture of Boca, and I might need a Ruby tank top...

As promised, I'm back to share my Ruby tattoo, and to start writing more regularly. This has been the most amazing summer of a most amazing year, and I've been doing a great deal of reflecting on luck, love, loss and gratitude. For perhaps the first time in my life, all that I've experienced seems strung together on the same thread - seemingly unrelated things echo back to each other and sadness and joy nestle inextricably together.

Four years ago in July, I lost both of my fourteen-year-old dogs within ten days of each other. That same year was defined by other losses, but July's hit the hardest and/or compounded all that came before because I had also lost my mother - the person I loved most in the world - in July of 2010. Summer seemed especially cruel for so many years. I believe my reaction to all this loss was delayed, with the year following being particularly dark. At times it seemed that the best parts of my life were in the past. How to allow brightness to glimmer at the edges of absence again? How to love deeply knowing that all you love will eventually leave?

What I've come to know is that is exactly how and why to love deeply. I have always had a close relationship with mortality - I grew up with so many animals that it was unavoidable. Losing was the price of loving. I have never over-sentimentalized this reality when it comes to animals, but more recently it has taken on new characteristics. A preciousness. I have had a few people assume, when they see my Ruby tattoo, that it is a memorial. Ruby will be five this winter and I hope we have at least a decade more together, but I already recognize what she means to me and how she's changed my life. I already know that she is my forever - or my little piece of forever, since forever doesn't really exist for any of us.

Sometimes looking at Ruby's amber grey eyes, or at my ancient little cat Nina's bedraggled frame, or at the beautiful faces of any of the people I hold dearest in my life, I feel my heart could burst. How lucky, to share this space in time with them. There are so many metaphors about loss and heartbreak, about the capacity or strength of that organ being diminished by trauma. The opposite can be true. The heart's chambers can be sprung wider, like the windows thrown open on a perfect summer day. Gratitude has infinite square footage.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that everything will always change. We can count on that. We will experience devastating loss. We will wonder how happiness will ever appear on the horizon again. And then it will. In the form of a brilliant and complicated red and white dog who gazes into your very soul. In the form of a new relationship that takes you on incredible adventures and brings back forgotten wonders. In the form of peace and wisdom that can only come from time and experience, and recognizing that, in the words of Mary Oliver, this is what we get...this one wild and precious life. All is well with us - in fact, 2017 continues to be the best year in a
very long time in so many ways. I'm relishing the summer and all of its
adventures, and the Ginger Sisters adore our new roommate. I get my
tattoo of Ruby in less than two weeks and will be back to share that as
well!
In this unusual picture, the hyper dog is sleeping and the lazy dog is awake. Life is always surprising us...

For my first post of 2017 I'm here to tell you that I'll be taking a break from the blog for a while, to pursue other adventures and to contemplate a new direction and look for Rubicon Days. We are all doing well despite the frightening and uncertain times. Ruby and Boca continue to delight daily, and my nearly-twenty-year-old cat Nina continues to astound the vets with her feisty perseverence. I had an incredible 40th birthday and set some intentions for how I want this year to look, including less time on social media, more music, more long-form reading and writing, and some exciting travel plans. When I am ready to write here again, I expect to return to the style of blog I was first drawn to, filled with rich stories and personal experience. I so appreciate your readership and hope you'll keep us on your radar. Instagram is the best place to follow us now because I won't ever stop taking endless pictures of The Ginger Sisters. I am also getting my first tattoo - of Ruby - this summer, something I'll absolutely be sharing here.

Until then, please love those good dogs (and especially the "bad" dogs) and should you need us, for any reason at all, as Sarah's fantastical companions in Labyrinth say, we won't be far away.

When I adopted Ruby in 2013 I didn't exactly have a training philosophy, and I had no idea how essential training and management would be to our life together. By the time I adopted Boca (as a foster failure), I knew that positive reinforcement was my goal and I've tried to employ it every step of the way with my two wonderful girls.

Aside from trick training and enrichment like crate games, I don't do a lot of formal or obedience training, but my background in horses taught me that every interaction is training. Day to day life with The Ginger Sisters is a constant dialog, and sometimes lessons are learned - for good or bad - before I even realize it. My dogs are far from perfect, but my relationship with them is one of the most important and treasured in my life, and I would never sacrifice it for a shortcut. My adherence to positive training is non-negotiable and a value I won't compromise on. Its gifts aren't quantifiable, but among its greatest are love, trust and communication.

Over the past year I have had the opportunity again and again to see how our relationship had grown as a result of positive reinforcement and a willingness to listen. Never forget that the dog decides what is aversive. I talk to my dogs unceasingly and without apology, forming questions they get to answer. Recently I was able to hold Ruby upside down like a baby (it is not possible to have a small dog and not want to do this) - something that used to make her uncomfortable - because we have a foundation of trust, because I never forced it, and because I waited until she gave me permission. I literally ask her, out loud, "Can I hold you like a baby?" If she's feeling comfortable and safe, she says yes. I use the same technique when I pick her up as a redirection/safety net for her reactivity. I always say "can I see your teethies?" before I cup her chin and lift up her lip, and now she will let me look at her teeth effortlessly. Nail trims have gone from being scary to a painless ritual we call 'Peanut Butter Paws' - she runs to the sofa to get into position, almost unable to control her excitement about getting this rare delicacy reserved soley for the task.

Both dogs had some big firsts this year: Ruby went on a hike on her long line, delighting me by checking in frequently and happily navigating a mountain trail. Boca went on an enormous adventure, accompanying me on our southwestern road trip to Blog Paws where she met countless other dogs, people, and patiently handled noisy crowds, quiet classrooms and numerous hotel rooms. I could not have been more proud of her. Ruby even showed off some of her tricks during a vet visit this year! Just today, we had a little visitor, a Chiweenie I was taking to an adoption event for Paws on the Ground, and we had an uneventful introduction and walk with all three dogs.

I'm someone who analyzes, overthinks and second-guesses a great deal, but my commitment to positive training is something I never question. Its benefits and rewards show through every day in both subtle and astounding ways.

In the spirit of the season and as a token of our gratitude for embracing positive training throughout the year, we are giving away a prize package to one of our lucky readers. Two Outward Hound puzzle toys generously donated by A Dog Walks Into a Bar,, a humanely raised, ethically sourced treat selection from Open Farm, and the book 101 Dog Tricks from Ruby, Boca and me because I am passionate about trick training. The giveaway is open to U.S. residents and a winner will be randomly selected on December 15th.
