Rosie: Tribute to a Rescued Mother

Rosie is dog I transported for Paws on the Ground a few weeks ago - we were rear-ended at the start of our journey so our fearless leader came to pick us up as we were both quite shaken and the three of us continued to her new foster home. We've saved 60 dogs since becoming a non-profit at the beginning of the year, and most of the dogs and puppies aren't with us for long. Many I haven't even met, but some capture your heart almost instantly, and Rosie was one of those. Puppies are not really my thing - I've always adopted adult dogs. For that reason, it's funny that I've ended up deeply involved with a primarily puppy rescue, but all of those puppies have mothers, and we help the mothers needing homes whenever we can.

Rosie and her two puppies were tied up in a legal battle before coming to us - she had been nearly starved while supporting two babies. Both of her adorable puppies were adopted quickly but Rosie was a bit of a challenge with the typical independent spirit of her Husky/Chow lineage. I was smitten with her from the start when we went to help her first foster home work out some management solutions for her escape artistry. Her quiet confidence and gentle nature reminded me so much of my Chow mix, Lasya - the same lush black coat and soulful eyes.

Rosie was such a sweet passenger, curling up in her bed for most of the hour-long trip, then joining me in the front seat when she got nervous about the bumpy gravel road as we got close to her new home. We were so excited to see a lot of fenced land for Rosie to run on. It didn't take long for her new foster to fall in love with her, and I'm delighted to report that they have since adopted her. In the brief time I got to spend with Rosie, she reminded me of all that is wonderful about dogs - their trust and resilience even after enduring neglect and abandonment, their willingness to go on a new adventure even if it's a little bit scary. I can't think of a better time to honor this beautiful girl's second chance than on Mother's Day, and to ask you to please consider adoption first, especially adoption of an older dog.
